What made you decide to do Mission Year Married what was the draw for you?
We knew we did not want to just settle down right out of college and we also felt drawn to service. The philosophy of the program was in line with what we believe and how we hope to live out our faith.
What types of service and outreach were you involved with during your Mission Year?
I (Amy) worked with a refugee family helping them learn English and get acquainted with life in America, and we both worked at our church’s food pantry. Duffy also served at Grady hospital and Habitat for Humanity.
How are you different from having lived for a year in the city?
Well, we ended up staying in the city which probably would not have happened if not for Mission Year. We have come to see the richness in urban living and how much more important it is to develop relationships in order to feel connected to those around you.
How has your Mission Year experience affected your future plans & goals?
We will now always carry with us the lessons and experiences from the year, which include seeking out what we have in common with those we meet, appreciating the differences in those we meet and just trying to be good neighbors to those around us by being real and intentional.
How did Mission Year Married enrich your marriage?
Learning to be better neighbors through service and intentionality carried over to helping us be more intentional with our marriage and our service to one another and our family.
What did you learn about God during your year?
That God will continue to surprise us and humble us. He created us to be in relationships with others.
Can you give some words of wisdom to potential team members?
Come with an open mind and an open heart. This is a great place for young married couples to get set on a path for living lives for serving God.
