"Why I'm doing Mission Year"

Hi, my name is Amanda! I’m 19 years old (20 on December 23rd) and I’m from the small town of Franklin, Texas. Starting on August 27th I will be moving to Atlanta, Georgia for a year. There I will receive training in urban ministry, justice, and homelessness, and will be living in a household with five wonderful team mates with a mission to serve and talk to people. God has a heart for the poor and oppressed and He calls us to do the same. He has given me a concern for those the “least of these” and those who are often marginalized. From this experience I hope to learn more about the Father and His deep love for the poor, and better learn how to love and serve my brothers and sisters in the inner city.

“I’m not too concerned with what I am going to do. I am more interested in who I am becoming. I want to be a lover of God and people.” – Shane Claiborne

“If we are the body of Christ—and Christ came not for the healthy but the sick—we need to be fully present in the places where people are most broken.” – Mike Yankoksi

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me. Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’” – Matthew 25:34-40

About Mission Year

Mission Year is a year long urban ministry program focused on Christian service and discipleship. We take teams of young people, place them in an area of need, and help them to serve people and create community. We are committed to the command of Jesus to “love God and love people,” by placing the needs of our neighbors first and developing committed disciples of Christ with a heart for the poor.
