Greetings from Little Village! I can hardly believe that it has only been two weeks since I arrived in Chicago. These two weeks have truly been the most eventful of my life. There has been a lot to process (I’m still working on it) and a lot to learn and figure out, yet, I have never been more confident that I am exactly where God wants me to be.
Where am I exactly? I live in a Latino community called “Little Village,” which is located on the west side of Chicago. It is like stepping into a different country. My teammates and I have been able to make friends with our landlord, Raphy and her family. We had only been here a little while, and she invited us to her birthday fiesta. She and her family are beautiful people and have made us feel very welcome.
My teammates are beautiful people as well. Their names are Joanna, Justina, Emily, and Jessie. Each of them adds a unique aspect to the house—I guess you could say we compliment each other. I am privileged to be spending the next year of my life with them. Pray that we will stay united during the year, and that we will be a strong support system for each other.
Between training in Atlanta (that’s right: I traveled in a 15 passenger van packed full of the Chicago teams for the 13 hour drive—bonding time!), orientation, interacting with my neighbors, and seeing different aspects of the city, my ways of thinking and my faith have been greatly challenged. It is hard for me to see in reality the problems that I had grown up only hearing about. It is hard for me to see that racism still exists. It troubles me when I realize I tend to make assumptions about people based on their race or status. God does not do that at all. I’m finding how society views things and how God views things are very different (Luke 16:15). In light of that, I am beginning to see more clearly who Jesus is, and the stories I read about Him are beginning to come alive.
To sum it all up: I LOVE CHICAGO. I am so grateful to be here, and am excited (and a bit anxious) for all that is to come. Please keep my team and me in your prayers! Also, I am very thankful for all of the support I have received—I have about half ($6,000) raised! (The glass is half full). If you would like to help me reach my goal of $12,000, you can make out checks to Mission Year, write my account # 07-0049 on the memo line, and mail them to: Mission Year, PO Box 17628, Atlanta, GA, 30316, or donate online by clicking the “Donate Now” button on the right. Thank you again for all of your prayers and support. It means so much!

Dear Anna,
I am hoping that you will get to read this comment. We are so blessed to hear about how your “year” is going! We look forward to your updates and can’t wait to see what ‘happens next’. We are praying for you and cannot wait to hear more about the schools and your role in them and what the Lord is revealing to you in the time that you are in the ‘Little Village’. We love and miss you much.
Blessings!
