Mission Year 101

If you are on this blog, I’m guessing you know me. But, in case you don’t I am David Meyer an 18 year old from “the FA”, Wisconsin. Instead of college God called me to do a year long mission in the inner city and I’m glad I answered. Mission Year is a program that puts love, service, and community at the top of their list. Please check out their website if you would like to find out more, donate, or possibly consider it for yourself. My blog will be updated as often as possible, so check back for amazing updates!

About Mission Year

Mission Year is a year long urban ministry program focused on Christian service and discipleship. We take teams of young people, place them in an area of need, and help them to serve people and create community. We are committed to the command of Jesus to “love God and love people,” by placing the needs of our neighbors first and developing committed disciples of Christ with a heart for the poor. Last day before Spring Break / Mar 17, 05:47 PM

For starters, sorry that I haven’t blogged in so long, hopefully this one makes up for it. I won’t be back up north for break, as I have an amazing chance here to host a mission trip with CSM along with Sean (one of my teammates)! I know my first mission trip was a huge life altering step for me and look forward to working with a bunch of 7th graders from Tulsa, OK.

Thank y’all so much for your continued support of this year, I honestly couldn’t do it without you behind me. Money wise at last check I was $825 away from the goal of $12,000, thanks so much for all the love over Valentine’s Day.

I just applied to a college, when I finally figure out what God has in store for me next I will update my blog so everyone can know.

The real reason I wanted to blog though was because of some comments that were made that have been tugging at my heart. If you haven’t been following the situation of which I’m speaking, let me recap it for you.

Glenn Beck of Fox News recently recommended that all Christians run away from their church if they hear social or economic justice in a sermon or see it on their churches web site. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/12/us/12justice.html
Of course Jim Wallis had to chime in on the comment and he said the following. “What he has said attacks the very heart of our Christian faith, and Christians should no longer watch his show,” Mr. Wallis wrote on his blog, God’s Politics. “His show should now be in the same category as Howard Stern.”

What should this mean to you? Here is what the Spirit is leading me to say.
I’ve seen the signs “keep Christ in Christmas” for a while now, how about we keep Christ in Christianity. I began thinking about this post earlier today to respond to Beck’s comments, but Wallis’ response was just as disappointing to me. Certainly what Beck said was off the mark, as Jesus Christ showed repeatedly throughout his life that he had a heart for the least of these. And the Hebrew word righteousness that is mentioned hundreds of times in the Bible is most closely translated to justice. I am doing this Mission Year thing to show God’s love to people that don’t often receive it from “the church.” So we know that Beck is way off in his comments.

But, as I said Wallis’ response bothers me just as much. For one of the supposed leader of the Christian faith, he did little to emulate Jesus with his attack of Beck. In fact as I was researching the story I found a blog from a non-christian that I totally agree with. http://blogs.philadelphiaweekly.com/politics/2010/03/12/jim-wallis-un-christian-response-to-glenn-beck/
I do a crappy job at it to, but please Christians lets try to walk that walk and not just talk that talk. What would Jesus say? He would probably be a little more graceful with Glen than Jim was. I just wanted to put it out there in case you didn’t know that as Christians everything we say and do is being judged by people that do not yet realize what Jesus did for them on that cross and then again three days after. The better we are at loving our neighbor the more people will see the attitude of Jesus Christ echoed in our lives.
Stu this is for you, Love Wins!

Before Christmas update / Dec 2, 06:14 PM

This one is gonna be short but I want to inform you about three things.
First and foremost, in this time of Thanksgiving thank you so much for your support. I can’t express how thankful I am to all of you.
The other two things were a podcast that I think you should listen to…http://www.ecclesiahouston.org/v2/index.php click on Podcasts and then 2009 and then sermon from 11/15 “Get in the Game.” It was the message from the Mission Year president Leroy Barber speaking at our church, a must listen.
Also, Ecclesia is one of the founders of Advent Conspiracy and it is something that I think we all can and should be on board with. Please check out this video…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVqqj1v-ZBU and their website is adventconspiracy.org.
Can’t wait to see you face to face soon.

Much Love and God Bless,
David

What has been keeping me from doing this? / Nov 10, 10:01 AM

Hey y’all, it’s probably time for an update from down south. But, I did hear that back home the weather has been kinda like the weather in Houston, 70s in November in Wisconsin?

I’m sure you don’t really want to hear about the weather though, Mission Year has been a phenominal experience and I can’t imagine having done anything else after FAHS. Steven Cutbirth (who is awesome and actually interned at Ecclesia Church over the summer) and I have been placed together by God and I would say that we are working very well together despite the fact that he is an Astros fan.
The days in Mission Year are action packed and I’m really attempting to use better time management, so hopefully you’ll be getting regular updates here soon. Monday is Sabbath for us and I’ve really appreciated the relaxation that accompanies that. Tuesdays are very busy the five of us that work at Ecclesia, spend the morning/afternoon at a mobile foodbank that takes place at a place not too far from where we live in a very Hispanic neighboorhood. Then Steven and I head to Open Door Mission and put on the tutor hat for those interested in getting their GED. Wednesday is my day to get my barista on, as I work in the coffee shop at the church called Taft Street Coffee, if you ever end up coming down to Houston eat at our Bistro. I can tell you what to get, a PB&J-nini.
Anyway, that is some of what I do. And my time on the library computer is winding down. But, please feel free to email me at meyedav@gmail.com or add me on Facebook for more updates. I love you all and cannot even express my gratitude properly for you support in prayers and financial support.

God bless,
David
