God is faithful... / May 5, 09:48 AM
In my recent newsletter, I mentioned God’s faithfulness at on o my service sites, El Valor. Really, these stories are so great, I really wanted to go into detail in my newsletter, but I feared two front and back newsletters in a row would exhaust my readers…so if you are reading this and are receiving my newsletter, thanks for looking into my experience a little more, and your time will be worth it!
GOD IS FAITHFUL:
Story 1:
One day, I got to El Valor and Rogelio (a staff person my age) was so mad…mainly because he felt like a victim of unfair treatment regarding time off for training at another job he was trying to get for the weekends. Actually, he had already completed the training, but something was lost in the process, and he was never registered on the website that employers can go to to check if a potential employee is trained in certain things or not. It was a pretty ugly situation, and he was ticked. So, like we do most days, we got to talking about life, and his view on this day was that the whole world was unfair, rightfully so, in my opinion. I thought about it for a while, as he was talking, and I evaluated what keeps me from being defeated by this world’s ridiculousness…well, duh…that would be my hope in God. So I reminded him that one of the best things about being a Christian is that we can depend on God taking care of us…and that we don’t have to waste all of our time and energy worrying about it all. Rogelio has said many times before that he believes in God, but he didn’t believe that God would just drop a job in his lap. “Well,” In challenged him, “actually, God could and we often put Him in a box of what He cannot and will not do in our minds.” He teased me about my trust in God’s power a little while longer, and then the conversation was over.
So, the next day, I had just arrived at El Valor when I heard Rogelio paging me over the intercom to go upstairs. I opened the door to the second floor, he saw me and yelled, “EMILY…GIVE ME A HUG!”…and then he rushed over and squeezed me with my arms down to my side…it cracked me up. I was like…dude, are you engaged or something? He said, with so much excitement, “You were right! God dropped a job in our laps…my girlfriend got a call from one of the places she applied at last night while we were eating dinner…they said she got the job!…and we were so excited…and the first thing I thought was, ‘Emily was right…’ and then, ‘Thank You, God!’” My mouth just fell open…amazing right? GOD IS SO GOOD! But the best of this story…the part that shows me that my time here is fruitful as an encourager and friend..I was walking away and Rogelio said, “You’ve almost got me, Emily…” I looked at him with an expression that said, “What?” “You’ve almost dragged me over to the ‘light side’.” I laughed and replied, “Ummm…I think you’ve been there for a while now…” We agreed God was good and have ever since.
Story 2:
Since I am not sure I can use her real name at this time, we will call this person Rosa. Rosa asked me about a month ago to pray for her brother who was in jail, here illegally and facing a court date sentencing, most likely, deportations. She said he didn’t murder anyone, but it is still a bad situation. So, I told her I would add him to my morning prayers. I prayed that God would use this situation to reveal His love and grace to Rosa’s family and that His presence would be obvious. recently, Rosa came up to me at the end of the day and said that that day was suppose to be her brother’s court date, but the judge was sick or something. His court appearance would have to be rescheduled and it would be another 10 weeks before the court could fit him in for a trial. What I didn’t understand was that her brother was no longer in jail and was at home…so this was a HUGE answer to prayer for her family! Rosa totally recognizes that it was God responding to prayer…and I never would have thought He would work like this in this situation…but His love and grace are obvious! PRAISE GOD!
Story 3:
Mary Coster’s (an El Valor participant) 56th birthday was Wednesday, April 16th…a day that I will never forget due to our counting down to this particular day since January…She knew it was 2008 and another year to celebrate her birthday! All she wanted for her birthday was a card and a Hershey’s bar…so I made sure I got her both…after all, she’s been a good friend to me this year :) Mary was delighted to get her presents and offered a hug every time I saw her that day. Maggie, the volunteer art teacher at El Valor, also asked me to make a card for participants and staff to sign, so I did and I took it around the building…Maggie got everyone to sing Mary “Happy Birthday to You”, and presented the card to her. She was so touched and happy she cried…she must have felt so loved so deeply…God is faithful to Mary for providing her with such a deep feeling of appreciation and love on her birthday. THANK YOU, GOD, FOR SHARING YOUR LOVE!
