This quote has been a discovered truth in my life. Since coming back from Christmas break, I have had a very peaceful and renewed vision about what I want this year to look like. But sometimes you lose focus on the giving and celebrating of others in community, and try to find individual things that will make us happy. That focus on self causes sadness, not happiness.
When it comes to new years resolutions, I want to grow a beard. Any type of beard! Besides that I have recently challenged myself to take joy in all the daily work tasks that he would have me do at my work site and around the apartment. This is one way that I feel that I can seek the happiness of others , without shifting the focus on myself.
It’s not easy, daily sacrifice to God and others is a struggle. There is alot to fight when it comes to seeking happiness. That may sound paradoxical, but the end result is one of great encouragement. True joy comes from following Jesus and caring for others, anything else is a reaction of the false self, and not the true self who God intends us to be.
My favorite short story writer Flannery O’Connor says it well, “ You will have found Christ when you are concerned with other peoples sufferings and not your own.”
I have lived the joy in these words, as well as the despair of living for myself. I just want to sincerely encourage my fellow mission year team members as well as my supporters in this new year, to remember the words of Jesus, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
