The Reason I'm Doing Mission Year
Hi! My name is Joseph Givens and I’m a sophomore at Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, IA. I have applied and been accepted to the Mission Year program for the 2009-2010 year. Now you may wonder what exactly would posses me to do such a crazy thing as to go live in an urban environment with a bunch of stinky people for a whole year. Well, you see, the Lord has opened my eyes and my ears to the broken, hurting, poor people around me, and I will not be satisfied until I have made an attempt, through God, to make an impact and a difference! As I studied the Word of God, I found that many, many, many times Jews and Christians alike are called to support and care for the less fortunate. Well, as I have seen, this high call has been largely rejected, especially by the very people to whom it was made. That is why I feel it is my calling, and my duty to our Great God to carry out that command to the best of my humble abilities. Not only is Mission Year a year in which I will be among and minister to the poor and homeless, it is also an intense discipleship program. I will be working to fulfill Christ’s call to be a disciple, as I attempt to be conformed into the image of our Savior. I pray that God will use me in a great way next year, and I hope you will join me in those prayers. Thanks for your prayers and financial support!
About Mission Year
Mission Year is a year long urban ministry program focused on Christian service and discipleship. We take teams of young people, place them in an area of need, and help them to serve people and create community. We are committed to the command of Jesus to “love God and love people,” by placing the needs of our neighbors first and developing committed disciples of Christ with a heart for the poor.
