The music our collisions make!
So, I’m not much of a blogger but I am a grande procrastinator and since I’m suppose to be applying for summer jobs right now I thought I would put my best talent to use.
Hi, I’m Kaitlyn…or kaitie or kate but please never kat….I don’t know it just bothers me. I’m 20 years old and a sophmor in college. I live in Olympia, WA and go to a small bible college in Moberly, MO. Hummm…..what else can I say about myself without boring you….lets just make this quick and painless. I like big dogs, my favorite color is green, I’m the designated “hippi” at my school, I can be pretty quiet at first but at times sporadic and wild, all in all I’m pretty mellow….and I love mushrooms.
Now for the good stuff….. (oh, and I like to do this “…..” a lot when I write.
WHY MISSIONYEAR?
Well, there’s no big surprise here I’m sure the answer is ringing loud from all of us here at the big MY. It’s because I love God and I love people. My only problem is….Do I love them enough? I struggle with this problem especially when I pass the same guy everyday sitting on the sidewalk asking for change and all I can do is occasionally drop some dimes in his hand nod a hello and walk on. Then still have this aching in my heart to do more but ignore it every time. So, I guess that’s why I came to MissionYear. To see if I could love God and His people and then if I find that I can to see how to love them.
Also, honestly, as much as I love the Christian groups that I’ve joined I’ve grown a little tired of simply discussing how to help people in need and how to show others Christ…. I need a little actions in my life.
So, I guess there you have it…I’ll see some of you guys in Chicago!
About Mission Year
Mission Year is a year long urban ministry program focused on Christian service and discipleship. We take teams of young people, place them in an area of need, and help them to serve people and create community. We are committed to the command of Jesus to “love God and love people,” by placing the needs of our neighbors first and developing committed disciples of Christ with a heart for the poor. Hello Everyone,
I hoping to put a video blog up here soon but till then I’ll give you a quick overview of whats been going on…..
I started working full time at Woman Craft this week. I absolutely love every moment of it. Woman Craft is transitional jobs program for women that takes ladies who have either mental or physical handicaps or are getting out of prison or are living in homelessness and gives them a steady job. At Woman Craft we learn how to make paper out of recyclable materials but we also learn good job skills and social skills. there’s about 8 Women working there and I’ve really enjoyed working there for the past week (not to mention it’s a very “green” organization. we all know how much I love that) If you would like to learn more…..ummm….you can google them. I’m also volunteering part time at Chicago West Side Christian School…..that’s also been an amazing experience. Neighborhood outreach seemed to go very slow (and really Awkward) at first but it is getting a little easier…. Hey, they never said intentional community was easy. Slowly but surely meaningful relationships have started to sprout up.
Ok that’s all I have time for now but hopefully we can get the video up soon….
I love you all and hope you’re all doing well

newsletter update / Aug 22, 11:56 AM
(update time!!)
Location: Olympia, WA
Time Period: The month of August
Theme Music: The Heather’s
Bible Verse: Jeremiah 29:11-13
“For I know the plans that I know for you, ‘declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.
Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.
You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.”
Prayer Request: I ask that you would please pray for my sister. She’s has a new job in Vancouver, WA and will be moving down there soon…Please pray that everything would just fall into place. Also, I need great continuous prayer for this year in Chicago. Pray that God would just give me wisdom to deal with upcoming obstacles and also that He would help me to show love and kindness to all that I come in contact with for we are all his children…..and please pray for support raising.
Praise: I’ve been able to get in touch with my house mates in Chicago and I’m getting very excited about this year. Also, so many people have been incredible generous to me concerning donating to my fund and it really has been an amazing encouragement.
Current Events and Thoughts: August and this entire summer have been a complete blur to me. The days are dwindling faster then I ever thought they would and excitement builds in my heart everyday. It still just feels so surreal to me that I’ll be moving to Chicago for the next year. God really does know the plans He has for us and I am eager to see where it is He will take me and what He has to teach me. This week I found out that I’ll be living with the North Lawndale team with 5 other amazing people which includes Ruth Will, Tiffany Shreve, Stephen Baker, Phillip Roe, Kristen Wood. I ask that you would please keep these people in your prayers as well. The North Lawndale community is located on the west side of Chicago and is predominantly African American. I do not have an address yet but will soon and will give it to anyone who would like to send me a letter!. Right now we’re just trying to get things together and figure out who is going to bring what. I’m not sure of the organization that I’ll be working with yet but I’m pretty sure we find that out when we get there. So, as for now I’m just trying to get things in order for Mission year and spending the last few weeks with my family… Writing this newsletter is getting me even more excited!!!
Funny moment: Umm…Ok. So, I was walking down the street with a friend of mine and he started to read some of the stuff that had gotten carved into the pavement…. as he was walking he did not notice the parking meter planted directly in front of him which consequently wound up in a head on collision with his gut which resounded in a loud “thud’. The poor guy tried to walk it off like nothing had happened but I’m pretty sure my laughing prevented that….ah, good times.

THE MUSIC OUR COLLISIONS MAKE!
So, about me… (I’m gonna try to keep this pretty short so I won’t bore you all to death)
My name is Kaitlyn Aline Lucus. I live in Olympia, WA and just finished up my freshman year at Central Christian College of the Bible Moberly, MO. Umm… I like mexican food, gardening, reading, and my favorite color is green. I’m 20 years old and I like very large dogs. So, I guess that’ll about do it for me!
Why am I doing mission year? Well I’ve spent a great deal of my time in groups with Christians just talking about how there is need and how we should do something about it but we never really did. So, while in olympia I stopped going to the Christian groups and started reaching out to people only to find that you can’t do it alone. That’s when I decided to join Mission Year because it was a group that has really decided to put their faith into action. One thing that I have learned about myself is that if I’m not helping anyone or feeling as if I’m useful then, well, I’m not very happy at all. I’m using Mission Year to disciple me in loving people. I’m so excited to build relationships with all the people I’m going to come in contact with over the next year Christians and non-Christians alike. I’m reading to learn what it means to truly live for God….Loving Him and His people.
Psalm 133: 1
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity!
