Acts 2:42-47 / 03.05.10, 09:09 PM
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers (Personal Discipleship). Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles (Community Service). All who believed were together and had all things in common (Christian Community); they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need (Justice). Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple (Church Partnership), they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved (Relational Impact).” – Acts 2:42-47
After we were accepted to Mission Year, this passage prefaced the 1st handbook we received and I couldn’t have been more encouraged! I’ve always loved this passage and wondered what it would be like to actually live it out. And as you can see from the parentheses, Mission Year chose it to guide the structure of their program and its goals and values!
I’m especially looking forward to living in community, volunteering, building relationships, and pursuing justice.
Living in Community – It was one thing in college when I lived in a house with 6 other girls. It’ll be totally different now that I’ve been married for 3.5 years! I’m looking forward to the challenges and blessings it’s sure to bring.
Volunteering – I’m excited to try something new and learn more about immigration and community gardening!
Building Relationships – I can’t wait to get to know our housemates, members of the Alterna community, and people in our neighborhood.
Pursuing Justice – Easier to talk about than actually do! I’m excited to learn how to identify and seek solutions to injustices at the policy level as well as on a relational level.
