Are You Ready for Some Service? / 09.22.08, 03:41 PM
If you are a football fan, September is an exciting time. It marks the start of the season. It is the beginning of five months of tailgate parties, stadiums filled with fans, fantasy teams, coaches’ polls, and trash talking galore. If you are a football fan, September marks the culmination of months of speculation. Did we draft the right players? Did we recruit well? Did we sign the best free agent? Months of talking and planning come to a head. After a training camp and preseason it all begins. The defining moment is on the field over the next few months. Football fans answer the question put before us on Monday nights, “Are you ready for some football?” with a collective yes.
If you are a supporter of Mission Year or a fan of young people doing service, each September is full of excitement of a different sort. It marks the start of a year of service as young people make their way to Atlanta, Camden, Chicago, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and Wilmington. Churches and service sites begin to fill with anticipation as they prepare for team members to arrive. Did Mission Year recruit well? Will the young people this year be ready to serve like past team members? Will they bring the passion of Jesus? Will they have a heart for justice? Will they be good neighbors? Mission Year had our own version of training camp in Atlanta as we brought the team members from every city together for a week of training and orientation. The defining moment has arrived, and our team members are on the field.
Both football and Mission Year depend on their fans. If Mission Year did not have alumni and supporters, our fans, behind the institution, we could not field a team. These supporters are key to the work that takes place. You are key to the success of Mission Year through your financial support and your prayers that give our team members strength. Your commitment year after year makes it happen. We are counting on you to recommit this year. To cheer us on as we love people in the name of Jesus. To support us financially as we serve the poor as neighbors. To answer the questions, “Are you ready for some service? Are you ready for some justice? Are you ready to see people be loved?” with a resounding yes.
