In the last few months, I’ve spent a lot of time contemplating the difference between sacrifice and mercy. This past fall when I was living in Spokane, I decided to cut back my hours at work so that I could volunteer for 10-11 hours a week at Christ Kitchen, a non-profit business that employs women living in poverty. I have also continued to be involved with En Christo, a student-led group that makes and passes out lunches to the residents of a low-income apartment building, and to the homeless in downtown Spokane. Besides all that, I also started co-leading a Bible study at the same apartment building where we pass out the sandwiches on Saturdays. Then in December, I moved to Yakima for an unpaid internship at Sunrise Outreach Center, a homeless ministry. I spend 20-30 hours a week serving the homeless and low-income in my neighborhood. And I will be using all the money that I made this past year to help fund my time with Mission Year next year.
In the eyes of the people around me I have sacrificed. I have fulfilled the law. I am all right with God. But before all the self-righteous satisfaction has time to sink in, I remember what Jesus told the Pharisees: “Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice’ ” (Matthew 9:13).
God wants more than just my time, energy, and money – He wants my heart. But it is so much easier to sacrifice. To put in my “God” time, and spend the rest of the day doing whatever I want. I recently saw a picture of graffiti outside the Berlin Cathedral that said this: “Jesus died so that I can play video games naked until 5am with the heat maxed in December and throw away my leftovers from Applebees while lil kids starve outside. Rock ‘n Roll!”
I am so tired of compromise. I am so tired of living like God isn’t enough, isn’t good, doesn’t love me. I want to be so overwhelmed by His love and grace that it naturally overflows to everyone around me – that I naturally show everyone His mercy.
