My Grand Adventure!
Hi! This is Rachael’s first blog ever – so please allow me to introduce myself.
I am a senior in Gunnison High School, and even though I love my tiny Colorado town and all the people in it, I am quite excited to be graduating this May. Unlike most of my class (go ’09!) I will not be going straight of to college, but to one of the wonderful Mission Year Cities!
I was introduced to Mission Year by my youth leader, alumni Steve Futrell. He told me for literally years that he could see me going into this intimate, community-centered type of ministry, but I had to see for myself. We went to Atlanta last summer for a service trip and not only did I get the opportunity to work in a MY city, but I also got to meet some of the MY team, including the president himself, Leroy! When I went there I realized that my experiences in ATL would stay with me forever. Then I wondered if ATL’s exposure to me would be memorable. Because that is what matters – the spiritual and emotional maturing that I experienced (and hope to continue) would mean little if the community was not touched in some way by me. God led me to Mission Year so that I can be His hands and feet. That idea – dedicating our lives to showing our love for God through our love for people – demonstrates to me the most real and substantial type of worship, and that is, after all, what I was Created to do.
About Mission Year
Mission Year is a year long urban ministry program focused on Christian service and discipleship. We take teams of young people, place them in an area of need, and help them to serve people and create community. We are committed to the command of Jesus to “love God and love people,” by placing the needs of our neighbors first and developing committed disciples of Christ with a heart for the poor.
