Mission Year in Houston
Houston is a melting pot of racial diversity, lending itself to some amazing ethnic restaurants. The summers may be hot, but the winter weather is wonderful! Houston has been "going green" in many ways and recently built an environmentally friendly park in the center of downtown with water fountains, jungle gyms, ponds, a stage for live music and performances, two cafes, art exhibits, farmer's markets and more. It's a great city to discover with lots of hidden treasures. Mission Year has been located in the Eastwood neighborhood, which is a primarily Hispanic community. Immigrants deal with many issues including culture shock, language barriers, racism, and laws surrounding work status. Houston has a high population of immigrants due to its location near the coast and to Mexico. Our friends in Eastwood definitely need good neighbors as they navigate their lives in a new country.
